Abstract<\/h2>\n

Objective<\/strong>: The purpose is to study the effect of short-term hypoxia on the ability to restore olfactory disorders in people who have had a COVID-19 disease.<\/p>\n

Methods and participants: <\/strong>The study involved 14 people aged from 22 to 63 years who had COVID-19 from 1 to 15 months ago and had various types of olfactory disorders as a complication of it (such as anosmia, hyposmia, distortion of odor perception). People were divided into two groups: the main group consisted of 10 people used normobaric hypoxic training; the control group consisted of 4 people continued their usual daily activities. The correctness of odor recognition was assessed using V.I. Voyachek odor test, assessment of the sensitivity of smell was based on a test using acetic acid solutions with a concentration from 0.2 to 0.9%. Normobaric hypoxic training consisted of breathing for 30 minutes per day through a hypoxicator accompanied with control of blood oxygenation. The training was continued for 5 days. <\/p>\n

Results:<\/strong> The participants of the main group experienced significant changes compared to the control group in both tests. On average, the quality of odor recognition increased by 56%, and sensitivity by 134%; in the control group, the indicators for both tests changed by only 4-6% at the same period. <\/p>\n

Conclusions: <\/strong>The results obtained in a course of the implementation of normobaric hypoxic training protocol are in the zone of statistical significance according to the Mann-Whitney U test (p=0.05). The proposed method can be used to restore olfactory disorders after suffering COVID-19.<\/p>\n
